Top Healthy Snacks to Pack While Traveling

Summer is officially less than a month away, and people are planning their summer vacations! For people with kids, that means bundling their little darlings into the car and hoping they’ve got suitable entertainment. Others are traveling with friends, staying at home taking an online defensive driving course NY or traveling by themselves. They all have one thing in common. If they’re driving far enough, they’re going to need some healthy snacks on the road. Here are some good options.

Beef Jerky

For those not terribly worried about too much sodium in their diets, beef jerky can be the best road trip snack. Yes, it has calories and even fat, but it also has protein. Protein is essential to keeping up energy while traveling. All the caffeine in the world isn’t as helpful as having a decent amount of protein in your system. A small amount of beef jerky can be very filling. If your body is craving protein, it’s a much healthier option than a drive-thru. Plus, there are a wide range of options available. If beef isn’t your favorite, turkey, salmon, and pork jerky are also available. If you look in the right places, you can even find more daring options, like kangaroo, ostrich, or yak jerky. There’s nothing quite like the automobiles from the royal wedding and some delicious yak jerky to keep energy up on a road trip.

Apple Slices

Apple slices are a little tricky, but very refreshing. The problem, of course, is that they start to go brown about 30 seconds after being exposed to the air. But they’re a great snack that can satisfy a sweet tooth, so they’re worth the extra effort it takes to keep them fresh. The best way to keep apple slices fresh after cutting them is to put some lemon juice on top of them. This also adds to the tart flavor and brings out the sweetness. After that, be sure to store the apples in an airtight container, like a zip-lock baggie or a Tupperware container. That should keep the apples nice and fresh long enough for everyone to enjoy them.

String Cheese

String cheese is a great choice because, like beef jerky, it’s full of protein. Unlike beef jerky, it’s safe for vegetarians. Not only is string cheese tasty, but it’s a food that is also an activity. For parents doing their best to corral their offspring, string cheese can provide both sustenance and a distraction.

Baby Carrots

Baby carrots are the best thing to happen to road trips since (and before) MP3 players. They can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They come in bags that can be passed around so everyone can have a few to stave off hunger.  Perhaps most importantly, temperature doesn’t seem to affect baby carrots. They are refreshing and crisp straight out of the refrigerator. But they’re still crisp and only slightly less refreshing if they’ve been sitting in a car for a few hours. They’re also an amazing and money-saving snack for day trips, anything from hiking to amusement parks.

Water

More than any other snack, make sure to pack plenty of water for a trip. Of course, that means extra stops for restroom breaks, but that’s infinitely better than dehydration. If you have a good thermos, it can keep water cold in a hot car for a few extra hours. Water is the ultimate healthy snack. It’s cool and refreshing, and it keeps people hydrated far better than any alternatives, like soda or coffee. It also pairs well with any or all the other healthy snacks!
