Being on vacation seems like the absolute best time to say ‘buh bye’ to your diet. But there’s more than one reason this really isn’t a smart strategy. First, you don’t need to have a constant stomachache while you’re trying to sight see. Second, you don’t want to come back home only to realize you should lose the 10 pounds it took you six months to lose before you left. Watch Your Portions
Going to a restaurant when out of town is difficult. All those delicious meals on the menu? You’re not going to be taking the leftovers of those meals to work the next day. No, you’re likely to just end up throwing them away. What a bummer! Even if you don’t realize this while you’re out, it can make you eat far more than you ever wanted to eat just because the food’s in front of you. One of the best things to do is order something smaller, like an appetizer, sides or half portions, so you don’t have all that food to battle with before you head back to your hotel room.
Eating in Your Car
If you’re taking a road trip, there are going to be a lot of different requests when you’re cooped up inside the car for that long. Some people want to just drive and get there, while others prefer to get out and stretch every once in a while. No matter what your style is though, inevitably, you’ll probably have to eat in the car at some point. The best thing to do is get something that isn’t likely to spill. You should also be carrying plenty of fruits and veggies in the car. Everything in Moderation
Similar to watching your portions, remember that everything you consume should be in moderation. So that means that you can absolutely have a margarita (or two), but you might want to stop at a certain point. The key to moderation is to never feel as if you’re denying yourself of something you want. The more you say no, the more likely it is you’ll rebel against yourself. Tell yourself yes, but give yourself a limit. For example, you’ll only snack if you’ve managed to hit your exercise goal for the day.
Just because you’re in a new place, doesn’t mean that you can’t make requests when you’re out at a restaurant. Let the wait staff knows that you’re trying to eat a little better, and ask if they can modify the food in some way. It can be as simple as asking them to sub out the fries that come with the sandwich for something a little better for you. Also, most menus will feature a few lighter dishes, so at least consider those before you order a burger.
Eating right doesn’t have to be a nightmare when you’re on a trip, but it’s not necessarily going to be the easiest thing you’ve ever done. Depriving yourself will make the vacation uncomfortable, so don’t set your expectations high enough that you’ll be disappointed if you happen to overdo it. Remember that you aren’t defined by a few mistakes, and just go right back to the original plan of eating healthier.
