A couple of weeks ago I featured an interview with Brett Dillon  and we learned a little about his gig and even some of the acts he feels are ones that we should know about.  One of the bands he told me about is Ned Van Go, out of Nashville.  Today,  I was listening to his show as I was driving around, and I heard a song from the band Roman Candle out of Ashville, NC and I freaked!  Thank goodness for a station like KHYI 95.3 and a dj like Mr. Dillon for playing these bands that simply wouldn’t get the play or attention they clearly deserve, in our area, let alone ANYWHERE outside of their respective “villas”.  Each band perfectly blends rock, folk and country grooves with lyrics that are comical, thoughtful, and most of all, original.  My favorite NVG track is “Never Kissed a Girl” which is a hilarious story of self-loathing, murder, and sexual dysfunction set to a perfect psycho-billy sonic style.  In fact, it is the best song that Hank III or Supersuckers never wrote.  The song that caught my attention on the radio today (other than Adam Hood’s 22 Days Too Long“) was Roman Candle’s “Modern Radio is A-OK with me.“  It too is a funny, point well-made story with a Dylan-esque “Like a Rolling Stone” melody to help you forget that you are hearing a song that is actually making a statement on the state of todays short-playlisted corporate radio stations and pre-fab emo-punk bands (yeah, I am talkin’ ’bout you My Chemical Romance).  Please check out the myspace sites for these guys and catch them on the dates when they will be rolling through town, as it will be rare, for the time being at least.  I believe that Ned Van Go is scheduled to play a Shiner Sunday soon, so please be there early, and give them a reason to keep coming back to the DFW area!  Also, please listen to any station (95.3 seems to be the only real option that covers the entire DFW area, as 95.9 can’t seem to get east of the airport) that features great DJ’s who you can trust to bring you the distinct, different, and “need to know” bands that you will not get anywhere else.

[...] Non-Texans that continue to expand the boundaries of Alt-Whatever.  These folks aren’t just being Country, or just being Rock, or just being Indie, they’re just…being (being pretty awesome). [...]
